X-Men Origins: The 1960's
The world of the X-Men was first introduced in 1963 by co-creators writer Stan Lee, and artist Jack Kirby. The first team of X-Men:
Cyclops
Scott Summers is the X-Man known as Cyclops, during the 1960-2000 he is portrayed as the ultimate boyscout, and the mouthpiece of Professor Xavier's Dream of Equality.
1960's History:
As a young boy, Scott Summers grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, Scott's father USAF Major Christopher Summers, took the family on a flight in his airplane, the Summers are then attacked by an alien vessel belonging to the Shi'ar Empire then run by the fanatical D'Ken. During the crash Scott, and his brother Alex, are placed in the only remaining parachute by their parents, and saved from death. The boys then become wards of the state and are separated.
Cyclops is later sent to an orphanage in Omaha, Nebraska, which is run by Dr. Milbury, an alias of the mutant geneticist Mr. Sinister. Scott seems to have forgotten most of his past, and when Scott's powers manifest uncontrollably he runs away from the orphanage and wanders before being taken in as ward by Charles Xavier, and made the first X-Man.
Jean Grey
Jean Grey is the former X-Man known as Phoenix. She has died, and been resurrected many times.
1960's History:
Jean Grey is first brought to the attention of Charles Xavier, by her father Dr. John Grey, who is concerned about Jean since she suffered an accident, which turned out to be the manifestation of her powers, due to her mentally witnessing the death of her best friend at the time. Xavier then places mental blocks in her mind.
Jean is later brought in as the X-Man known as Marvel Girl. During these first appearances Jean is portrayed as a the least powerful member of the team.
Angel
Warren Worthington III is known as the X-Man Angel/Archangel.
1960's History:
Angel is introduced as a wealthy playboy, having gone to the Philip's Exeter Acadamy in his youth. Angel is first shown to have been a vigilante known as the Avenging Angel, who helps people with non lethal weapons before joining the X-Men.
Warren during his first appearances is depicted as an outspoken member of the team, and known to flirt with Jean Grey in his initial appearances.
Beast
Henry "Hank" McCoy is the X-Man known as Beast.
1960's History:
Hank is the team's scientist, and the first to officially graduate as a student from the school. He is initially depicted as a "normal" white male, unlike his mostly known blue furred appearances.
Iceman
Robert "Bobby" Drake is known as the X-Man Iceman.
1960's History:
Bobby is the youngest of the X-Men, is depicted at first the practical joker, and not taking super heroics as a serious job.
Mimic
The former X-Man, and one time Deputy Leader of the team Calvin Rankin.
1969:
Two new X-Men were brought into the team, the mutant Lorna Dane aka Polaris, who is then unknown to be the biological daughter of Magneto, and the mutant Alex Summers aka Havok, the long lost brother of Scott Summers.
Why the X-Men?
The X-Men have represented many social issues that have come into my life due to me being a gay man, and just as a person in general, so I feel an already deep connection with their hopes, fears, and wanting to find a place in society.
